Sakina Tutoring

I first started tutoring at 16 while studying for my A-Levels, where I achieved A*A*A, after scoring eight 9s at GCSE. But during this time I learned that it's not about being naturally smart or studying non-stop – it’s about figuring out how to study the right way. With the right approach and mindset, any student can reach their goal.

Experience
In the last three years, I've taught both online and in tuition centers, and right now, I'm volunteering as a maths teacher at an NGO in East Africa! So far, teaching in a new language has made me reflect on how communication works at its core. I've really learnt how to break things down in different ways and adapt to different audiences.
In a class of 30, some students want to get ahead, while others are still struggling to keep up – naturally, many lose focus. I’ve been there too. As a student myself, I understand the challenges young learners face when revising, and I want to use this relatability to support them, keep them motivated and help them reach their full potential.

My teaching style
Active learning
The other day in class, Alex was copying notes from Lola, desperate to get everything down from the slides. Halfway through, he realised that what Lola wrote didn’t make sense, because she had copied it wrong from the board. Lola had used passive learning.
Many students fall into passive study habits just to feel productive, but they’re not actually engaging with the content. That’s why, in my lessons, I emphasise active learning - techniques that help you to actually make sense of information and retain it for much longer (as shown in the chart).
